Holiday Celebrations in Italy

The holidays in Italy are celebrated with fairs, joyful festivities and torch processions. These are not only religious activities but they also honor the birth of the "Unconquered Sun". This is also the period of the greatest feast of the Ancient Roman Empire, "saturnlia", (a winter solstice celebration). Italians create artistic and elaborate manger displays during this time. Often, there is a competition for the best display in the same town. People go from place to place to view and compare the displays.

Another tradition is the burning of the Yule Log, which must stay lit until the New Year's Day. This symbolizes that the old year and its problems are destroyed. In the holidays, they make a lot of sweets. The sweets include panatone, (cake filled with candied fruits) and panforte (gingerbread made with hazel nuts, honey and almonds).

On January 6th there is also a festival called "The Epiphany" celebrated. That day, children put their shoes outside for the lady Santa Claus called La Befana to put presents in. She is an old lady who rides broomstick through the air. She carries bag of candies and gifts. If the children are good, they will get presents and candies. If they are bad they will find "coal" in those shoes.

Childrens sing a poem to praise La Befana:

La Befana vein di notte
Con le scarpe tutte rotte
Col vestito alla romana
Viva,Viva La Befana!

The English translations:

La Befana comes by night
With her shoes old and broken
She comes dressed in the Roman Way
Long life to the La Befana!
